North Korea Hardens Nuclear Stance
Lee remarked, "Following the (start of the) war in Iran, North Korea will be even less inclined to give up its arsenal." He further suggested that US President Donald Trump's "unique personality" could be "very helpful" in managing the current situation with Pyongyang.
North Korea has declared its nuclear program as "non-negotiable" and emphasized that its nuclear status is "irreversible."
The US-Iran war erupted on February 28, when the US and Israel carried out strikes against Iran. In response, Tehran launched attacks on Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, while also shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was eventually brokered on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan.
Lee also stressed, "When it comes to the defense of our nation, we must take matters into our own hands." His administration has promised to raise defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, up from 2.7% the previous year, aligning with Trump’s calls for allies to expand military budgets.
Additionally, Lee explained that Seoul would pursue US approval to develop nuclear fuel enrichment and reprocessing technologies strictly for civilian use. He highlighted that enrichment would remain limited to the low levels necessary for powering nuclear reactors.
